How to start and build a thriving business

Written by Vivienne Corcoran Monday, 16 November 2015 16:13

I was thrilled to be a part of University of Southern Queensland's capacity building program titled: Empowering women through entrepreneurship, innovation and business sustainability. More about it here. My Presentation and book were well received and it was inspiring to hear regional women's stories. Hopefully there will be more to come.

What the professions need for the future

Written by Vivienne Corcoran Wednesday, 07 October 2015 16:25

The Victorian Government has asked for feedback on what is needed to help keep the professional services sector thriving in Victoria.  Here is what I think the professions need to thrive in Victoria.

What would you say to the government about what the professions need?

The Victorian Government is interested in feedback on what is needed to help keep the professional services sector thriving in Victoria.  Below are the questions they ask in their Future Industries paper.  Submit yourself or, if you have an opinion but not the time or the inclination to respond, let me know and I will respond on your behalf:

1. Where are there specific skills and training gaps in professional services and how best can we build, attract and retain the right skills for this sector going forward?
2. Does the local labour market meet this sector’s needs? To what extent, if any, does the sector rely on migration to fill skill gaps?
3. How are workforce management practices and employee expectations changing in this sector?
4. What impact is outsourcing having on business models and employment levels across the sector?
5. How important is networking to professional services businesses? What are the benefits and what type of networking is most valuable?
6. What particular challenges do regional firms, small and medium firms and start-up businesses in professional services face?
7. What are the big technology opportunities for the sector and how can Victorian businesses best capitalise on them?
8. To what extent is Victoria’s professional services sector a global leader in innovation, design and technology?
What are Victoria’s strengths?
9. What are the key opportunities for export growth? Which products/services? Which markets?
10. What factors constrain professional service export activity?
11. What opportunities are there for growth in the domestic market?
12. How well placed are Victoria’s professional services businesses to capture Government procurement opportunities? How could Victorian Government procurement practices be improved?
13. What are the most important regulatory and reform priorities for the sector? Who would benefit from these reforms and how?
14. To what extent does access to infrastructure determine where professional services businesses locate?  What are the other factors?
15. Does Victoria have the right infrastructure in place to support long term competitiveness and growth?
16. Are there advantages in attracting the headquarters of more domestic and international firms or other investors to Victoria? What businesses would you suggest? Who would benefit and how?
17. What are Victoria’s key capabilities and competitive advantages? How could they be better promoted?
18. What are the key things that the Victorian Government should be doing to support growth and competitiveness in Victoria’s professional services sector?
