Learn how to stand out from the crowd

Being an expert, knowing the detail and providing clients with great insights and solutions are the reason you went into practice. The only challenge you have is that so did everyone else. How do you stand out from the crowd?

You cannot be everything to everyone, so the first thing is to know what kind of work you want to do and the kind of clients you want to do it for. Next you need to learn to market yourself. If you work inside a larger firm, then you need to market yourself to those people within the firm who can help you get work. If you work on your own, you need to learn to market yourself to referrers and clients. You need to know how to leverage your strengths, market yourself in person and on social media.  Importantly, too, you need to learn how to turn contacts into clients without 'selling'.

All of this is easier than you might think, and I am delighted to be presenting on these topics at the upcoming Legalwise Seminar in Melbourne on Thursday 9 March 2017. Please join me!

Welcome to 2016!

Learning from last year - new clients

Before we look at what the New Year has in store, let's look at what we learnt from last year.  We had 4 new clients last year, two from referrals, one from an old colleague and one from a directory listing, interesting stats compared to previous years.  I have thanked the referrers when they referred in the work and again at the end of the year.  I sent a Christmas card and a note to both the new clients and the colleague thanking them and saying how much we enjoyed the work.  I will update all our directory listings over the next few weeks.  In all instances we need to focus on what we enjoy and where we add value, rather than just on what we do.
