So this week I have presented and listened to:

  • accounting partners about business growth
  • Healthcare Directors about clinical governance
  • CFOs about what their accountants do that adds value; and
  • law firm partners about how to keep senior associates engaged.

Things I learnt in Cup Week

  • If you do not bet, you do not miss anything.
  • Having a business development focus makes more work come in just by focusing on it.
  • There are still plenty of workable weeks between now and the end of the year, so keep going.
  • Ask a client what they want next year, you might be pleasantly surprised!
  • VCE is more stressful as a parent than as a student.

The end is nigh

With Cup Day just gone, the end of the year is not far away and it is tempting to think there is not much that can get done now.   Here are a few things you can do now to make the most of the rest of the year:

  • Clarify with staff when the office will be closed over Christmas and ask them to nominate when they want holidays. Publicise a roster of who will be in the office when.
  • Clean up your database. Consider sending clients an email asking them if there is anything they had in their To Do list for the year that is still not done, explaining that you have the capacity to help throughout the holiday period if they need it, but importantly that you are at full strength to deal with anything they need now.
  • Use any bounce backs to clean up your email database.
  • Organise Christmas card lists, making sure you know who is signing what to whom. Plan to send out cards in the first week of December.
